About the Roybal Center
The Roybal Center for Elder Mistreatment Intervention Research is part of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Roybal Network, funded by the National Institute on Aging through the Edward R. Roybal Centers for Translational Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences of Aging program.
The multidisciplinary center draws on extensive resources and expertise of UTHealth Houston researchers at Cizik School of Nursing, McGovern Medical School, UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, and UTHealth Houston School of Behavioral Sciences.
Our Goals
- Create an infrastructure of expertise and pragmatic resources that support the progression of research projects through the NIH stages of intervention development by a) addressing crucial problems related to initiating elder mistreatment (EM) research, and b) increasing the pool of researchers trained in EM-focused intervention research.
- Evaluate the mechanisms and outcomes of scalable interventions that address the causes and consequences of EM for community-dwelling older adults and their family caregivers.
Aging Research at UTHealth Houston
The roots of clinical geriatrics leadership at UTHealth Houston can be traced to establishment of the university’s Consortium on Aging by the late Carmel Dyer, MD, who joined the medical school in 2007, and even further back to the founding of the nursing school’s Center on Aging in 1987.
Today, six researchers at the university have led or held key roles on 63 elder mistreatment research projects with more than $46 million in funding. The Roybal grant follows recommendations from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that a research center for elder mistreatment based at UTHealth Houston would accelerate research in the field.
