When Summer (Alexander) Merritt, MD ’04, attended McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, she quickly bonded with her peers, serving as class president and completing her residency in family medicine. Today, Summer supports the school and serves on its Alumni Association executive committee, building connections with current medical students following the path she once walked.
“They remind me of my younger idealistic self,” she says. “Getting involved with McGovern Medical School again helps me remember why I chose medicine in the first place.”

“The scholarship I received as a medical student provided the opportunity to enrich my clinical experience outside of the built-in curriculum. This allowed me to explore various fields more thoroughly and ultimately led me to discover my passion for psychiatry. My future aspirations include gaining international experience and then returning to Texas to contribute meaningfully to the community that shaped me. I hope to be able to mentor and guide the next generation of physicians.”

"I am so fortunate to have received a scholarship from the Alumni Association Competitive Fund throughout medical school. The scholarship funds were immensely valuable in relieving the financial burdens of higher education, especially by making me eligible for in-state tuition as an out-of-state student. This allowed me to concurrently pursue a Master of Public Health, expanding my knowledge of social determinants of health and allowing me to effectively and compassionately care for patients. Because of the scholarship funds I received, I am now achieving my dreams as an OB/GYN in my second year of residency."

“Receiving the Hitoshi Nikaidoh, MD, Scholarship was a blessing during my fourth year of medical school. Not only was it encouraging to have an organization show faith in my journey to become a physician but also a charge to continue serving patients with genuine kindness. I was able to focus less on the financial stressors of medical school and devote my attention to being truly present with my patients.”
