Eunhee Kim, PhD

Assistant Professor, Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery
McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston

Dr. Eunhee Kim is an assistant Professor in the Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery at UTHealth. Dr. Kim received her Ph.D at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea. At Burke Medical Research Institute under Dr. Shungee Cho, she acquired extensive experience in cerebrovascular pathophysiology with specific training in in vivo and in vitro studies of ischemic stroke. She defined the role of an inflammatory mediator, CD36 in acute stroke outcomes in hyperlipidemic and diabetic conditions and the underlying mechanisms governing stroke with the comorbidities. She was also involved in studying the importance of synaptic plasticity for long-term functional recovery after stroke and the effect of genetics using animal models of human BDNF polymorphisms.

A major focus of her research is promoting a better understanding the of pathophysiology of brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM). AVMs are critical risk factors for hemorrhagic stroke in young patients; however, the etiology and pathology of brain AVMs are is largely unknown. Dr. Kim is currently investigating the role of several molecular factors related to endothelial dysfunction, angiogenesis, and inflammation in the pathophysiology of brain AVMs. By modulating these factors in vivo and in vitro, her research includes generating clinically-relevant animal models and defining the underlying mechanisms of AVM formation and pathology, and investigating the subsequent impact of AVMs in cerebral hemorrhage.
