I. POLICY AND GENERAL STATEMENT
An individual instructor or a department should have wide discretion in the choice of materials to be used in courses offered by the department, with the acknowledgement that frequent changes in the prescribed textbooks are discouraged. Approval, as indicated in the procedures below, is required for the use of materials written or prepared by faculty members.
II. PROCEDURE
Faculty members are encouraged to author books, outlines, manuals and similar educational materials. The prescribed use of these for students, however,is a responsibility that goes beyond that of the individual author. When practical and equitable, the charge for outlines, syllabi and similar materials prescribed for students should be borne by the instructional department of the course. Whenever a charge is authorized for duplication of materials, the price should be as low as possible, consistent with the payment of a fair and reasonable royalty to the author(s).
Before students may use or buy textbooks, notebooks, manuals or other materials written or prepared by faculty members, the faculty member must request approval from the departmental faculty (including the chair), the applicable dean(s), the Executive Vice President & Chief Academic Officer ("EVP/CAO") and the President.
