I. POLICY AND GENERAL STATEMENT

This policy, in accordance with Regents’ Rule 31004 - Rights and Responsibilities of Faculty Members, describes the rights and responsibilities of faculty members.

Faculty members have the following rights:

• Full freedom in research and in the publication of research results;
• Freedom in discussing his or her subject. Faculty members are expected not to introduce into their teaching controversial matter that has no relation to his or her subject; and
• Freedom from institutional censorship or discipline when speaking or writing as private citizens.

Faculty members have the following responsibilities:

• Teaching in the classroom, laboratory, seminar or clinical setting.
• Making themselves available to students and other trainees to discuss questions, concerns or the progress of the student.
• Studying, investigating, discovering, creating and developing professionally.
• Performing curricular tasks auxiliary to teaching, research, and patient care, e.g., serving on faculty committees, attending to administrative and disciplinary tasks, fostering intellectual curiosity and integrity in the student body.
• Using their professional expertise to benefit society.
• When speaking or writing as a private citizen, the faculty member should make it plain that he/she is not a spokesperson for The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
