2024r2 - August 30, 2024, New Features and updates:
- The data is updated through June 30, 2024
- Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine (WLHSDM) becomes the latest and the 13th site to join BigMouth.
- Significant improvements made to the backend infrastructure to accommodate the data from the growing number of institutions joining BigMouth.
- General bug fixes and enhancements have been made.

2016r2 - Oct 24th, 2016 New Features and updates:
- BigMouth website updated
- Updated COHRI mappings with the latest terminology

2016r1 - May 9th, 2016 For this release we are pleased to announce the following improvements:
- Data updated through March 15th, 2016.
- Race and Ethnicity categories have been updated based on changes in axiUm v5.2 (and above).
- "Unknown" Race category added to Race breakdown graph for patients with no race data recorded.
- Procedure codes can now be queried based on status – "Completed", "Planned" or "In Progress".
- Removed test/manikin/virtual patients: Filters have been added in consultation with sites to exclude any test/manikin/virtual patient data found in their axiUm instances.
- i2b2 client and server upgraded to Version 1.7.07.Date constraints can now be added to the individual items listed in a panel. Now able to delete temporal relationship and events from a temporal query.
- Bug fix: Prescription Medication terminology was displaying some medications that are not available to be prescribed at sites. The list has now been updated to show only prescription medications. Patient’s self-reported medications will be available to query in a separate folder in the next release.
- Other minor bug fixes and infrastructure upgrades.
2015r2 - October 9th, 2015 New Features and updates:
- All COHRI data has been updated through September 2015.
- Extract scripts were updated and unified, improving data quality.
- Updated UMLS procedure codes
- New domain name bigmouth.uth.edu has officially gone live, and replaces cohri.uth.tmc.edu. (the old name will continue to function)
- New update process reducing downtime
- There were also many smaller bug fixes and performance improvements made in the supporting infrastructure.
2015r1 - Friday, April 24th, 2015 New Features and updates:
- University of Michigan becomes the sixth site to join the BigMouth Dental Data Repository.
- All COHRI data has been updated through March 2015.
- You can now see when your site’s data was last refreshed on log-in and at the top of the i2b2 window.
- Added a Practice terminology folder to BigMouth.
- Treatment and diagnoses are now linked. These transactions are not yet query-able in i2b2 but are available for researchers on request.
Bug fixes and performance improvements:
- The Help link at the top of i2b2 is working again.
- There were also many smaller bug fixes and performance improvements made in the supporting infrastructure.
In progress:
- We continued to work on adding Medication terminology to COHRI hierarchy. These terms will be available for querying in the next release.
- Data quality processes continue to be refined and improved upon.
2014R2 (intermediate release) - Friday, February 6th, 2015 Major changes:
- a. i2b2 upgraded from 1.6.08 to 1.7.04 - that includes many new features and bug fixes.
- b. Performance improvement – Server upgrades
- c. New “temporal querying” feature: This new feature will allow users to run more complex queries that involves the time in which the event(s) occur. For example, users can now query for “All patients greater than 18 years who had a diagnosis of ‘Chronic periodontitis’ and received a ‘Scaling and Root Planning’ treatment within 180 days of the diagnosis. ” A PDF has been attached to this email explaining how to utilize the new temporal querying feature.
2014R2 - Wednesday, November 26th, 2014 For this release we worked on the following:
- Updated COHRI data through Oct 2014.
- Insurance and Prescription medications used by patients are now searchable under your site’s Axium folder. The COHRI mappings for the same will be available in the next release.
- BigMouth website has been updated.
- Server upgrade resulting in improved query speed.
- Security Enhancement: axiUm patient numbers are not stored in the BigMouth DDR any more.
- Data quality enhancements include:Diagnoses now contain a link back to associated procedures in the database. Similarly, Procedures contain link back to the corresponding diagnosis. We no longer include “Deleted” and “Suspended” records. This may have an effect on the visible patient counts in certain folders. The ‘&’ symbol in form names no longer causes queries to fail. Some Tufts odontogram records that weren’t getting extracted previously are now in the database. Inclusion of additional forms data for all sites. Better compatibility with axiUm 6 and Meaningful Use requirements.
