Biography

Ayanna Troutman, Ph.D. (she/her/hers) is a proud first-generation graduate of Spelman College and earned her doctorate in school psychology from the University of Florida. Her research focuses on enhancing the educational experiences of Black girls and developing culturally responsive interventions for Black youth. Currently, Ayanna is completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center, where she conducts research and provides group therapy to children at risk for traumatic stress. She is also working to expand evidence-based prevention and intervention efforts to underserved populations. Ayanna's long-term goal is to engage in community-based research and practice while teaching at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Research Description

Ayanna is currently working under the supervision of Dr. Funlola Are through the Nurturing Resilience Initiative. Her research focuses on the intersection of mental health and education, with a particular emphasis on exploring the lived experiences of Black girls in school settings. Through this work, Ayanna seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges these girls face and provide actionable insights to improve mental health outcomes and enhance their educational experiences. In addition to her primary research, Ayanna’s broader interests involve expanding her work into school systems and juvenile justice settings to advocate for systemic change. She is committed to promoting radical healing frameworks that support the holistic well-being of Black youth.
