Biography

Salvatore Saieva received his MS in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology from University of Palermo (Italy). In 2014, he was selected for the International Joint PhD in Neuroscience, between the University of Palermo and UTMB at Galveston, TX, which allows the students to achieve 2 PhDs: he received the Italian PhD in 2018, and the US PhD in 2021. In 2021 he became a Postdoctoral Fellow at UTMB (Dept Neurology), where he studied potential preventative mechanisms to Alzheimer's Disease (AD); in 2023 he joined UT Health (Dept Neurology), where he studies mechanisms of AD progression.

Research Description

Dr. Saieva studies Alzheimer's Disease (AD), the most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide, known to affect memory function and overall brain function. He is investigating how the peripheral organs contribute to AD pathology: one projects studies whether deposits of amyloid-beta in eyes are suggestive of mechanisms occurring in the brain, while the other one investigates whether systemic infection can accelerate AD pathology in CNS. Another important feature of AD is neuroinflammation, condition that may be exacerbated by concomitant co-morbidities that may accelerate AD pathology.
