UTHealth Houston welcomes first patient to pioneering telehealth epilepsy clinic
UTHealth Houston is proud to announce the successful opening and first online patient visit at its groundbreaking Telehealth Precision Genetic Counseling for Epilepsy and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, a state-of-the-art telehealth initiative aimed at transforming the management of epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders through personalized genetic insights and virtual health care.
The clinic offers a convenient telehealth platform, enabling personalized genetic counseling to individuals and families affected by epilepsy. The precision genetic counseling clinic represents a significant advancement in epilepsy care, making specialized genetic insights accessible to patients regardless of location.
“We’re excited to provide this innovative service that combines cutting-edge genetics with compassionate care through the convenience of telehealth,” said Dennis Lal, PhD, program director and associate professor with the Department of Neurology in McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
The clinic aims to significantly improve patient outcomes by tailoring treatments to the genetic profile of each patient, thus offering a new level of personalized care previously unavailable to many.
“Our goal is to empower patients and families by giving them a clearer understanding of their genetic health, and through detailed genetic variant level reports that will enable local physicians to make informed decisions about treatment and management,” said Lal, who is director of the Center for Neurogenetics at UTHealth Houston.
