By Richard “Hal” Halpin, MEd, EdD, EMBA, Director of Educational Technology, Office of Technology Services & Informatics May 20, 2024

Dear School of Dentistry Community,

As you have likely seen, there have been ongoing conversations on AI across UTHealth Houston and whether there is a preferred chat tool. IT User Experience and Support has shared its approved recommendation — Microsoft Copilot.

Copilot is a chatbot developed by Microsoft that offers capabilities similar to other AI tools, such as Chat GPT, but in a secure environment that protects commercial data and campus information.

Copilot generates custom answers using current web data. Users can ask follow-up questions, and every response is accompanied by sources so the user can see where the information came from.

For employees, the best user experience with Copilot will be with Windows 11. This newer operating system will be provided as part of the upcoming PC rollout this summer.

To access the free version of Copilot, navigate to the Microsoft Copilot homepage and log in with UTHealth Houston credentials. There are also Copilot training videos available for quick tips on how to use the program.

Copilot for Microsoft 365 licenses are available for community members who want to use an enhanced version that integrates with Microsoft Office applications. That program is $360 per individual user per year.
