$3 million grant awarded to determine genetic relationships to heart failure in minorities

A $3 million grant to determine how genes affect a person’s risk for heart failure has been awarded to Bing Yu, PhD, The JLH Foundation Chair in Transplant Prevention at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health. The project is co-led with Vasan Ramachandran, MD, inaugural dean of The University of Texas School of Public Health San Antonio, which is a partnership of UT Health San Antonio and The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Using a combination of biomarkers and mood assessments, researchers will study how pregnant women who are experiencing depression respond to different antidepressants in a clinical trial funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health to UTHealth Houston.  Depression affects approximately 12% of pregnant women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.





Tao receives grant to construct vaccine knowledge base

A four-year, $1.2 million grant that will help create a vaccine knowledge base has been given to researchers at UTHealth Houston, which is a subcontractor on a larger, $3.7 million grant awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Having experienced a stroke less than three hours before being admitted to the hospital, Andrea Arsimendez qualified for the Multi-arm Optimization of Stroke Thrombolysis (MOST) clinical trial at UTHealth Houston, which is investigating which blood thinner – argatroban or epitifibatide – improves recovery among acute ischemic stroke patients treated with standard-of-care thrombolysis within three hours of symptom onset.
