Kevin A. Morano, PhD, serves as senior vice president of academic and faculty affairs at UTHealth Houston. In this role, Morano works with faculty at all UTHealth Houston schools, helping them to pursue their professional aspirations. Additionally, he serves as associate dean for faculty affairs at McGovern Medical School.

Morano is a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at McGovern Medical School and a faculty member of MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. His research is aimed at understanding how cells maintain their proteome in a functional state, especially during environmental stress or pathological stress caused by protein folding disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. One of his primary focuses is a commitment to training graduate students to advance molecular biological and cell biological research in this area.

The Roger J. Bulger, MD, Distinguished Professor at UTHealth Houston, Morano is a two-time recipient of the John P. McGovern Teaching Award as well as the Paul E. Darlington Mentor Award, both at MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School. He has also received The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ Outstanding Teacher Award and the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Morano is a native Californian who received his Bachelor of Science in biological sciences at the University of California Irvine. He earned his PhD in microbiology at the University of California Davis, with a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan.
