UTHealth Houston- Juneteenth Celebration

Event Description

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the monumental day in 1865 when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas to declare all 250,000+ enslaved African Americans in the state as free in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation’s executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth” by the newly freed people of Texas. On Thursday, June 15th from 12:00pm-1:00pm, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion invites the community to learn more about on the origins of Juneteenth and will be offering tea cakes at each of the university’s six schools.
